All the world needs is….more kid-friendly gyms

I get it.  Parenting is hard.  You can’t fly at the seat of your pants anymore because you are at someone else’s beck and call.  Going out with your friends, a grocery trip or even going to the bathroom takes a babysitter, stars aligning and a sacrificial lamb.  

I’ve been in your shoes and I still am.  You may think you are alone and that your situation is unique but I guarantee you, it isn’t.  There is someone, somewhere in the history of mankind that has been in your situation and got out alive. 

Now onto my point…..

You might have given up Ladies Night at the club with penny pitchers but you don’t have to give up the gym.  Yes it can be a little more difficult but it can be done.  Of course hikes are kid-friendly and working out at home works for many but if you are like me, you have to get out of the house and socialize with people.  That said, I am on a mission to find all the gyms, studios, boxes, spas, etc that have some form of childcare so moms and dads can get their sweat on.  If they have a class for the little guy at the same time, bonus points for them!  

One of my favorite things to do is drop in at gyms and try new classes.  So it comes to no surprise that the first question I always ask is, “Do you have childcare?”  

I don’t expect a full service daycare with full-time staff.  I’m realistic.  This is a catch-22.  I find that parents don’t bring their kids to the gym because there is no childcare whereas the gym doesn’t have childcare because they cannot justify paying for staff when no kids are there.

BUT if they offer it, people will come!  I guess it’s a risk most don’t want to take.   (I promise you now, any business I open will be kid-friendly)

Like a mouse on a wheel

I had no intention of going to the gym today because B is sick. I don’t want coughing snotty crusted kids around my son (if we can help it) so I don’t do the same to others.  Well I was itching to lift so I texted our babysitter with crossed fingers hoping that she had no plans….and she didn’t!  Gosh darn I love having a babysitter on my street to come over at a moments notice!  Off to the gym I went!

Note the excitement for the front squat.  My 1RM was #165 and today I did 3 reps at #155.  Sounds like I need to be trying for my new 1RM soon!  I heavier front squat equals a heavier clean.

The WOD was modified because I didn’t have a place to do toes to bar.  Instead I doubled the sit ups.  That part was a bit too easy for me but I’ll keep that in mind for next time.  It’s a good problem to have.

It is unseasonably warm up here in New England that I have actually been toying with the idea of going for a run.  Key word “toying”.  Haven’t quite convinced myself yet.  Until I do, I will probably start doing Endurance training inside on a treadmill. Because we all love to feel like a mouse on a wheel, right?

Throwing Weights and Ball Pits

Since I’m on the computer 50 hours a week, my penmanship and really gone to crap.  Then add a WOD and it’s even worse.  Hope you can make out my mess below!

I actually had to cut the Outlaw workout short because it was going to take me over 2 hours to do it.  I can’t be spending that much time at the gym when I need to be getting my booty to work.  Still a good one though.

Snatches are programmed often with Outlaw which really isn’t that big a deal except for the fact that I’m a reluctant doing it where I am.  Technically you are allowed to do Olympic movements but they don’t encourage dropping weights.  Not that I plan to, but it’s been known to happen.


Since I get to workout everyday, it’s only fair that B does too.  Sunday, Monday and Wednesday we head over to “My Gym” so B can get his fun on.  Doesn’t this look like a good time??  If it wasn’t frowned upon, I’d jump in there too!

‘Tis the season of snug pants

Adulting is no joke.  I want to be a kid again.  Why is it too much to ask to just win the lottery so my bills will take care of themselves?

As you can tell by the lack of my posting, I have been insane busy.  On top of that, not inspired to write since my mind has been elsewhere.  That’s bound to happen from time to time.  Or I AM inspired to write but not physically able to.

I continue to attempt eating healthy and keep active over the holidays.  Ahem…note the italics.  Between my girl trip in October and going home for Thanksgiving, the scale went up 10#.  Ah well.  It could be worse!  Although my jeans are snug, I have continued to hit up the box at least 3 times a week.

I was thinking about this the other day as I try to put a plan together for after the holidays.  There are several factors to consider here.  But before we get into those, my food choices are healthy but my portions are not spot on.  Portioning my macros is key for me.  At 36, whoops, 37 years old, I still haven’t learned how to eat the right portions without tracking it.  Will I ever?  If you have any tips, feel free to tell me because quite frankly I feel like I’m forever chained to My Fitness Pal.

The “factors” at play here that are wrecking havoc on me are 1) I am breastfeeding less and 2) I’m not endurance training anymore.  Considering those 2 factors, I cannot justify my 8 ounce sweet tater with Kerrygold butter anymore.   That in mind, I have to rework my macros which I will take care of after the holidays.  I’m setting myself up for failure if I started now.

I decided to try something new and starting going to a new Barre3 studio in town.  I thought I had this.  Thought it would be no big deal, just something different.  I could not have been more wrong!  I had muscles on fire that I didn’t know existed!  It took everything in my power to not grimace and grunt….everyone else looked so graceful and proper.  Sheesh. And yes I went back.  3 more times.  I love challenges.  It ticks me off when I can’t do it which makes me want to do it more.  Competitive you say?  Yep.

Only reason I stopped going was because I had no more free classes left.  As much as I want to purchase a class package, I already belong to TWO CrossFit boxes.  Which brings me back to my original question, when am I going to win the goddamn lottery?!

Started playing around with food again.  Everyone is talking about this “bone broth” which my family has been making since…..forever?  Any time we make chicken, we always take the bones, throw it in a pot with water and herbs and cook for hours.  I’m reading that bone broth is to be cooked for at least 24 hours but we stick to about 3 or 4.


Doesn’t it look delightfully gross?  I had a 3# rotisserie chicken from BJ’s that I had polished of myself.  (Don’t tell me I’m the only one that tears through a chicken with their bare hands!)  I threw the skin in there for the hell of it. Came out fairly decent.  Of course it’s not as good as my Mamma’s.  Nothing ever is.


Between B and I, sweet potatoes are still a must-have around this house.  I end up making them by the bag.  Clean, poke with holes, rub with EVOO and sprinkle with salt.  425* for an hour or until done.  “Done” for me is when I can easily pierce it with a knife.


What you see here was an experiment with old bananas.  While I love banana bread, I don’t like it when I polish off an entire loaf by myself.  I had a sweet tooth….and I wanted something NOW so I found a recipe on pinterest using bananas, oatmeal, chocolate, coconut……and now as I am writing this I realize that I don’t have the recipe!  Which is okay because I didn’t necessarily like the cookie.

So why did I add it to this blog?  Because I’m an *sshole I guess.

Happy New Year!

Not to sound like a Scrooge, but I don’t like resolutions. I hate them in fact. Whenever I see people make resolutions, I feel sad for them.

Allow me to explain.

More often than not, people make resolutions to lose weight, tone up, yada yada. If it was really that important to them, they should have already been working on it. Growing up, every year without fail, I resolved to lose 10 pounds, and every year I didn’t do it. It’s depressing and made me feel like crap when I looked back and didn’t do what I said I would. So I quit doing it. I never make resolutions to lose weight. Honestly, I don’t NEED to lose weight. I had unrealistic expectations. Unrealistic meaning Heidi Klum’s figure. That’s not me, that’s Heidi. I will never look like Heidi. So once I accepted that, I was happier.

Ever notice how packed the gym is around this time of year? How can you not? A good majority of those new members will drop out by the end of February. Why? Because they set unrealistic goals for themselves. They can’t keep up….they burn out…..they lose motivation.

So instead of saying, “I will lose 20 pounds this year” instead tell yourself that you will start going to the gym 3 times a week. Tell yourself you will cut back on the soda pop. Tell yourself you will go for more walks with the dogs. Make small attainable goals that will lead you to the big one. Plus, doesn’t it feel good to accomplish those goals?

While I no longer make weight loss resolutions, I do set different goals for myself. That being said, for the year of 2015 I resolve to:
– Run a half marathon (which I have already signed up for)
– go to the beach at least once (I only live 45 minutes away!!)
